Luis AVEIGA vs Ertan TARHAN, OPEN TOURNAMENT -MAY 2024 -QUECHAN CASINO- YUMA ARIZONA,

Paperback Writer was recorded on 13 & 14 April 1966 and was released as a single on 30 May 1966, influencing popular music in many ways. Two major new areas for the Beatles with this release were a full departure from the Love Song for basically the first time, and a much more distorted lead guitar. Additionally the bass is far more prominent on this single than it had been in the past and this was due to some creativity by Geoff Emerick at Paul's request. The basic track was recorded on 13 April 1966 in two takes. Paul is on lead guitar playing his Epiphone Casino, John is likely on his Gretsch 6120, George is playing the Tambourine, and Ringo is on drums. Then on 14 April, the Beatles came back to the studio to record Rain and put overdubs on Paperback Writer. Luckily we have photos of this day: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1107803049339901&type=3 Here we can see Paul overdubbing his Rickenbacker bass onto both Rain and Paperback Writer, and we can see George holding his Gibson SG. Here George is likely playing his overdub on Paperback Writer. I'm guessing this overdub part was far longer originally but they ultimately opted to go easy on the overdubs given how much the distorted Casino fills the mix compared to the norm of several guitars being overdubbed on many tracks during 1965. In my cover I used my Guild Thunderbird for George's SG part. Additionally another new piece of equipment in the studio were the new Vox UL 7120 amps. In the Rain backing track photos, John and Paul are both playing through the UL 7120s, and on April 11th Paul can also be seen recording through a Vox UL 7120 for Got To Get You Into My Life. Given this, it seems likely that Paul was playing through a UL 7120 on April 13th for the basic track of Paperback Writer as well. Alternatively some believe it is Paul's Fender Bassman, but given how close these amps are being mic'd it seems unlikely his Bassman could break up that much without being too loud for the mic. More research is needed. Some notes on the guitar parts: John's tremolo part has a mistake at 1:00 where he seems to have mistaken the beginning of a verse for the middle of a verse. In the last verse John's part gets very erratic, coming in on the 4 for a few bars, then beginning to follow Paul's G octave notes, before switching to a syncopated rhythm at 2:08 to finish the track. Paul has a few variations, swapping to an alternate version of the riff for the second half of the song and changing from the standard Chuck Berry riff to this droning G octave part in the third verse. Paul McCartney - Lead and Harmony Vocals, Lead Guitar (1962 Epiphone ES-230TD Casino), Bass Guitar (1964 Rickenbacker 4001S) John Lennon - Rhythm Guitar (1962 Gretsch 6120), harmony vocals George Harrison - Lead Guitar (1964 Gibson SG Standard), tambourine, harmony vocals Ringo Starr – Drums (1964 Ludwig Super Classic Black Oyster Pearl), (taken from http://www.beatlesebooks.com/paperback-writer ) I'm using a Chinese made John Lennon Inspired By Casino, a 1967 Gretsch 6120, and a Reissue Guild Thunderbird I played the Casino, Gretsch, and Thunderbird through my Vox AC30CC2X going through a Doctor Robert pedal to emulate the UL 7120 (it helped a lot with lowering the bass and getting more mids), and I recorded everything with my WA-47 condenser mic about 10 inches from the center of the speaker cone, similar to what can be seen in the Rain session photos.
